Local Eagle Scout spruces up Centennial Gardens

The Island Now

On March 23, Joseph Lucatorto of Floral Park lead a team of volunteers to complete his Eagle Scout Project in Centennial Gardens. Lucatorto, a Boy Scout in Troop 134 at Saint Anne’s and a junior at Chaminade, took on the task of removing dilapidated garden boxes and build new boxes in the Giving Garden.

After months of planning with garden volunteer Pat Sexton, Lucatorto successfully worked with a team of dedicated volunteers from his troop, the community and his family to complete the project.

The Giving Garden donates the food it grows to those in need. Before selecting his project, Lucatorto, who enjoys gardening, worked with the recreation department to explore ideas that would benefit the gardens.

“When I learned about the Giving Garden, I thought it would be a great way to bring life back to part of the gardens that helps those in need,” said Lucatorto. Donations to help fund the project can be mailed to the Floral Park Conservation Society, Giving Garden Project, c/o Joe Serra at 144 Ash St., Floral Park, NY 11001.
