Living with a contaminated plume in Great Neck

The Island Now

By the ‘Committee Concerned About the Plume in Great Neck’

It’s been over a decade since Great Neck residents first heard about a contaminated plume in our town which began at the former Sperry/Unisys/Loral site in Lake Success. Some of the contaminants are carcinogenic and some are neurotoxic.

Over a year ago, a committee of several Great Neck residents and members of organizations such as Temple Beth- El Environmental Committee, Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition, Reach Out America, North Shore Action convened at Great Neck House to address environmental health concerns. Everyone chimed in at the same time asking, “What’s the status of the Lockheed Martin Plume?”

Some of us recalled years ago attending a town public meeting hosted by Lockheed Martin at one of the Great Neck Public Schools. The speakers tried to reassure us that they had everything under control through groundwater pumping and drinking water treatment, soil vapor extraction and long-term monitoring.

Our committee reflected on the longevity of this plume and that according to Lockheed Martin the cleanup will continue until 2044!  We all agreed that another Great Neck Town Hall Public Meeting needed to take place to address many of our questions and concerns.

On Jan. 14th at 7:30 PM, a Great Neck Town Hall Zoom Meeting will take place. Glenda Clark will speak on behalf of Lockheed Martin. Girish Desai will represent the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Gregory Graziano, superintendent, will represent the Water Authority of Great Neck North. Manhasset Lakeville Water District was invited. Sarah Meyland, Water Specialist, with a background in groundwater protection, water resources management, and environmental law will state her opinion on the presentations being delivered.

Neal Lewis, an environmental attorney and executive director of the Sustainability Institute of Molloy College will be Moderator for the evening’s presentations and the Community’s Question & Answer period.
