Champkids, a Great Neck organization that provides young artists opportunities to compete and grow, will host its inaugural event — a live painting and drawing contest — from 5:30 to 9 p.m. May 12 at the Long Island Children’s Museum.
This will be a live drawing and coloring competition where children spend an hour to complete a work of art about the topic: Celebrate Mother’s Day.
The event is open to anyone between grades K-12, who will be split into different categories based on age. Champkids will provide 11” x 14” size multi media art paper; participants are required to bring their own drawing materials such as crayons, colored pencils, pastels and etc. Award winning local artists and art teachers will be judging the winners.
The winners in each category will be announced during an award ceremony at the end of the event and will receive special prizes and trophies. Their artwork will be featured at the museum’s Community Gallery exhibition in July.
By leveraging the qualities of a live competition — usually reserved for sports — Champkids aims to develop artistic skills within children, nurture passion for art, and reward young artists.
“When I was younger, I used to compete in many live art events. My success helped me become more confident and foster certain skills that were necessary for my professional success and relationship with others,” says Fenella Kim, founder of Champkids. “I was thrilled to discover that my own daughter, Allena who is 10 years old, is also interested in art! However, there are few outlets nowadays for young artists to show off their talent. With her encouragement, I decided to launch this new company and bring excitement to the art community.”
