The Long Island Rail Road will install a new pedestrian walkway bridge at the Port Washington station beginning Friday, according to MTA spokesman Sal Arena.
The LIRR will use a prefabricated bridge to replace the original bridge, which was built in 1959. Construction should be complete by Saturday night.
The original bridge was closed on June 29 after an inspection deemed it unsafe, and it was demolished in September.
The bridge stretches from the Haven Avenue parking lot to South Bayles Avenue near the east side of the station.
Arena said part of the South Bayles Avenue parking lot will be closed from 8 p.m. on Friday to 8 p.m. on Saturday to accommodate a crane.
As a result, Arena said, residents need to move their cars from the parking lot by 8 p.m. on Friday.
Remaining cars will be towed, Arena said.
The construction will require lighting, Arena said, and there will be demolition-related noise and dust in the area.
Residents said they were concerned about riders’ safety when the bridge closed in June.
Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio, who, along with Supervisor Judi Bosworth, called for a replacement bridge immediately, said in June that the closure could be safety issue.
After the bridge closed in June, residents complained to the Town of North Hempstead, saying that the Main Street entrance to the tracks was overcrowded and that it added time to their commutes.
“I would again like to thank all the residents and commuters for their support of my online petition.
Together as a community we were able to get this critical piece of infrastructure restored,” De Giorgio said.
From the time the bridge was closed, Arena said the LIRR knew a prefabricated bridge would be the easiest and quickest solution.
