Library board OK’s traffic study at Main

The Great Neck Library Board of Trustees on Thursday authorized a traffic study to be conducted at the library’s Main Branch at a cost of $5,000.

Library trustee Joel Marcus said the study is part of the application process for the Town of North Hempstead to let the Main Branch renovations start.

Board President Marietta DiCamillo said the parking study was not anticipated in the original budget for the project. DiCamillo said the town advised the board initially a study would not be needed, but recently told the board that on was necessary.

“It seems every time we’ve submitted a document we’ve had to have an additional study done,,” DiCamillo said. “The town told us didn’t have to do it, and now we do.”

Some board members expressed their concerns that $5,000 seemed like a lot of money, but DiCamillo said they need to approve the study soon so they can get moving on the renovations.

“These are situations truly out of our control,” DiCamillo said. “It’s not what the board has done – the board has been genuine.”

Dominic Calgi from Cangi Construction said at the library Building Advisory Committee meeting after the regular meeting that they are scheduled to appear before the Town of North Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals at their March 4 meeting with the parking study done.  He said it was only in the last couple of days the additional requirement was made known to them.

Cangi said the study should be done by Feb. 11.

The Main Branch, located at 159 Bayview Ave., will be closed for a year so repairs can be made to the building. The repairs will be funded by a $10.4 million bond approved by the voters in the Great Neck library system.
