Library board looking for new trustee

The Great Neck Library is searching for a new trustee following the resignation of Board of Trustees Vice President Martin Sokol.

The nominating committee will recommend two candidates to replace Sokol, whose resignation was publicly announced at the board’s September meeting.

The library board will then select one of the two candidates to replace Sokol for the remainder of his term, which ends in January 2014.

“Martin Sokol was a Great Neck Library trustee since 2006 and in a variety of roles, including board president for two years, served the library admirably,” said library director Jane Marino in a statement. “Martin always put the Library’s interests first when acting as a trustee and was a great value to me as director, to the rest of the board and to the community at large.  I am sorry to see him leave the Board but the work he has done will continue to be an asset for the Library.”

The board’s plans have been pushed back by the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Their planned meeting on Oct. 31 was cancelled and has yet to be rescheduled. The Main Branch only regained electricity on Friday.

“[Sokol] felt it was too much of a time commitment and wanted to spend more time with his family,” Marino said.

Efforts to reach Sokol were unavailing.
