Letters writers entitled to own opinions, not facts

The Island Now

I must confess that after several very pessimistic and critical letters to the editor, full of statistics, from the prolific North Hills dentist, I have some questions.

Where does he get all the statistics and the conclusions about all the aspects of American life he deals with in his letters? I simply cannot understand how he has come to the conclusion that writing such letters to the editor have saved his life.

After all the research he has done, I would appreciate knowing about his sources. I have a deep interest in the state of the world and am absorbed by the causes of problems, and the ideas of those who want to solve problems. In a very diverse nation, I am still impressed by the fact that others in the world still aspire in large numbers to come here and work for themselves and the lives of their children.

Does the doctor have any interest in helping to improve our society with all its problems, or just attacking his fellow citizens?

I cannot share his attitude. I believe that everyone who wishes to make a contribution to our development as a society can do so. It takes some effort but each individual in our country can help. I believe that we get the government and society we deserve, If we do not like what our representatives are doing, we have an obligation to tell them what we would like to happen and constantly remind them that we are watching what they do.

We have an obligation to go to the polls in every election. Those who represent us will listen when they know that 90 percent instead of the estimated 50 percent vote in national elections and abysmal percentages less vote in local elections.

Everyone in this country has the great privilege and right to speak up, to learn what is going on and fight for improvement. Why do you leave it to others to act positively?
