The Sewanhaka Central High School District will see new electronic signs at each of its five high school buildings after receiving a $250,000 from Nassau County legislators.

“These signs will certainly go a long way in keeping our community and parents informed,” Superintendent of Schools Ralph Ferrie said.

Nassau County Legislator Carrie Solages made the announcement at the Oct. 28 Board of Education meeting.

“This is a particular privilege and honor for me because I’m a graduate of this great school district from the Class of 1997,” Solages said.

The signs were originally part of a rejected $99.5 million bond proposal from December and were cut out of a newly crafted $86.6 million bond, which voters approved in May.

The bond will be used to replace and repair the roofs at all five district high schools, replace classroom windows, make masonry repairs, renovate the auditoriums of the five high schools and install a new turf field at each school.

The funds for the district were allocated as part of a bipartisan effort between himself and legislators Vincent Muscarella, Richard Nicolello and Laura Schaefer, Solages said.

“On behalf of our students in the district and certainly on behalf of our building principals and staff, we would like to thank you and the other legislators for the work you do to support our district,” Ferrie said.

School officials said they expect construction of the signs to begin in the spring.
