Large works exhibit of abstract expressionist

The Island Now

An exhibition of large works by Abstract Expressionist Barbara Bilotta will be on display in the Art League of Long Island’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery Aug. 9 through Aug. 24.

In “Cross Currents,” Bilotta’s use of acrylic paint and resin immerses the viewer into her work, evoking a sense of spectator becoming part of the painting.

“I consider myself an Abstract Expressionist,” Bilotta said. “There is an elemental strength in my images that grounds them, setting up a contrast with the dynamic use of colors and shapes. My goal is to transform the natural order into a suggestive interpretation to stimulate the imagination.  Much of my interpretation is rooted in my color palette. I love everything that is brilliant and incredible and I attempt to incorporate it into my work. One of my goals is to bring out a beautiful interplay of light and shadows, and is it is this which gives my images a palpable sense of physicality, even at their most abstract.”

Bilotta has won numerous awards for her work and is represented in galleries throughout the country.  She most recently showed her work at the prestigious ArtHamptons, the annual International Contemporary and Modern Fine Art Fair held every July at Bridgehampton’s Nova’s Ark Sculpture Fields. A reception will take place Sunday, Aug. 10 from 3 to 5 p.m.

“The surface of my paintings is also the result of an intriguing contrast,” Bilott said. “I work mostly in acrylics glazed with resin, and the acrylic’s softness and the resin’s hardness combine to create a “charged atmospheric space” in which the viewer is made to feel the movement of the paint.”

The Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery is open free of charge Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m, Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Art League is located at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills.
