Lady Quakers go undefeated, take top spot

 The Friends Academy varsity girls’ golf team won its conference title for the third consecutive year on Tuesday, May 14. The Lady Quakers turned in their third consecutive undefeated season as well, with a total of 36 wins over the last three years. 

Beating Great Neck South 7 1/2-1 1/2, the team clinched the conference crown with senior Augusta Mayer, of Glen Head, scoring 45, and sophomores Stephanie Gherlone, of Mill Neck and Marianna Cuomo Maier of Lattingtown, finishing with 45 and 43, respectively.

The Quakers credited their league domination ti their determination and skill. 

“We could have been closer,” said Coach Gail Baker, “but each individual girl played to their best in each of their matches. We also set it as a team goal to go undefeated this season.”

Following their conference clinch, the Quakers continued on to the county round at Bethpage on May 20 and May 21, where they finished second behind Garden City. Mayer and Gherlone qualified for the state championship and will head to SUNY Delhi on Saturday, June 8.

A combination of veteran and novices contributed to the team’s overall depth this season

“Our overall goal was to maintain the strength we had with our veterans and incorporate the new girls as we look toward the future,” Baker said.

Enrolling 779 students from age three through Grade 12, Friends Academy is guided by its Quaker heritage and the principles of integrity, simplicity, patience, moderation and a peaceful resolution of conflict.
