A fire in the kitchen of a Mineola restaurant sent flames and black smoke through the air  on Saturday afternoon, according to officials.

The Nassau County Police Department reported that the fire occurred around 3 p.m. at  Churrasqueira Bairrada on Jericho Turnpike.

Officials said that 3rd Precinct officers responded to the call, and fire departments from Mineola, Williston Park, East Williston, Garden City Park, Westbury, Carle Place and New Hyde Park were able to extinguish the fire.

Officials reported no injuries and said that the investigation is ongoing.

A sign on the front door of the restaurant reads, “Due to fire, we will be temporarily closed.”  The restaurant’s Facebook page said, “An electrical unit caught on fire. The restaurant would be [closed] until further notice.”

The restaurant is one of the most long-standing Portuguese restaurants on Long Island.  Opened in 1993, it is known for signature chicken dishes and other meats that are grilled to the customer’s satisfaction as part of a rodizio or all-you-can-eat style of eating that originated in Brazil.

Mineola is home to one of New York’s most dense Portuguese populations. The restaurant is a yearly participant in the Portugal Day parade in May.
