John Lewis Childs School fifth-graders learned about the free market economy during a recent visit with Junior Achievement volunteers.

The “Our Nation” lesson provided students with practical information about businesses’ need for individuals who can meet the demands of the job market. It also introduced the concept of globalization of business as it relates to production materials and the need for students to be entrepreneurial in their thinking to meet the requirements of high-growth, high-demand careers worldwide.

Students reviewed concepts and terms, such as advertising and capital resources. They also priced items from their desk to see if their peers would “purchase” them. The Junior Achievement volunteers, from Price Waterhouse Coopers, led discussions on price points and the motivation that drives certain purchases with students.

The interactive lessons allowed students to work in groups to brainstorm different ideas. They also designed advertisements, worked collaboratively to make decisions, solved problems and roleplayed.
