Joan Rivers to bring sharp wit to Westbury

The Island Now

Joan Rivers will be at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury on Friday, Oct. 11 with special guest Steve Tyrell. Rivers is an internationally renowned comedienne, Emmy-award-winning television talk-show host, Tony-award-nominated actress, bestselling author, playwright, screenwriter, film director, and red-carpet fashion laureate.

Rivers was the first woman to break the glass ceiling of late night television. After she was chosen to be the only permanent guest host on “The Tonight Show” for three years, she then went on to become the first woman ever to host her own late night talk show – “The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers” on Fox.

Rivers career has spanned more than five decades. After creating and hosting “Live from the Red Carpet” for E! (1996-2004), Rivers returned to anchor that network’s popular franchise “Fashion Police,” hosting both its hour-long weekly broadcasts and its awards-season specials.

Her latest book, “I Hate Everyone.…Starting With Me,” a New York Times bestseller, was published in June 2012. Previous best-selling books include, “Men Are Stupid and They Like Big Boobs: A Woman’s Guide to Beauty Through Plastic Surgery” and “Murder at the Academy Awards: A Red Carpet Murder Mystery.”

In 2009, Rivers starred in NBC’s reality series “The Celebrity Apprentice,” emerging as that season’s winner. This significant event, along with many others, was featured in her critically-acclaimed documentary, “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work” premiered in theaters nationwide in 2010, and is available on DVD.

Enduring tawdry clubs, Borscht Belt showrooms, and grimy Greenwich Village cabarets, her comedy career skyrocketed in 1968 when she first appeared on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson. Rivers continues to dazzle live concert audiences in Atlantic City, Las Vegas and across the entire country. In October 2012 she returned to the United Kingdom and Ireland for a sold-out concert tour – her first since 2005.

From her trademark question, “Can we talk?” to her red-carpet creation, “Who are you wearing?” the woman who asks all the right questions gets the answers America – and the world – want to hear.

Even though Steve Tyrell is a five-decade veteran songwriter and producer who has worked with a diverse group of artists (Rod Stewart, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles to name a few), he’s dedicated his solo recording career solely to the Great American Songbook, starting off with his 1999 recording debut, “A New Standard” and was the first in a new wave of contemporary artists recording the standards.

Of Tyrell’s previous nine albums, seven have made the top five and his most recent debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Traditional Jazz Chart.

Tyrell said of the Great American Songbook, “What makes these songs so great, and the reason they have lasted 70 and 80 years is that they allow each artist to create their own distinct versions. You can love many different artists singing the same song. I think Sammy Cahn’s legacy should be celebrated in its 100th year. These songs are a part of American history.”

Tyrell will open the show, which begins at 8 p.m. by singing hits from the Great American Songbook.
