JCC chairman, 10, preps committee for fundraiser

He’s 10 years old and has already led two fundraising initiatives for the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center, but Adam Liebowitz is only getting started.

The East Hills resident, the JCC’s youngest-ever committee chairman, is preparing a group of 20 peers to collect toy and monetary donations for the upcoming “Auction for Excellence, An Epicurean Event.”

Members of the Children’s Auction Committee met in November for a pizza party and brainstorming session, and have since held a bake sale fundraiser at Lester’s of Greenvale.

“I wanted to get more children interested and teach them how important charity work is. If we could get kids to come to the meeting, we could get them more involved,” Adam said. “I wanted it to grow so a lot of people would learn how they could help out and work to reach our goal.”

Adam in 2013 collected more than 100 brand-new toys and approximately $4,000 for donation to “Auction for Excellence,” which annually benefits the JCC’s programs.

He told Blank Slate Media at the time he became interested in community service after seeing some of the work his mother, Donna Liebowitz, had done for the JCC.

For the upcoming “Auction for Excellence” – the 20th incarnation of the event – the JCC named Adam chair of the children’s committee, in an effort to inspire other children his age to join him in giving back.

“It’s really important for us to help children in this area understand how important it is to help the less fortunate,” said Susan Banco, the JCC’s associate executive director, in October. “This is a great way to help get the kids involved.”

“Auction for Excellence, An Epicurean Event” is scheduled to take place March 19 at the Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story inaccurately described Susan Banco’s title as the assistant executive director of the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center. She is the JCC’s associate executive director.
