Our Views: Islanders versus Nassau County

The Island Now

And so the Islanders said, “We’ll see your two million dollars and raise you two million.”

Not really, but it was something like that when Nassau County told “Newsday” that the Islanders and their management company, SMG, owe Nassau county more than two million dollars in rent and electric bills.

SMG replied that the county may owe the Islanders more than $2 million for repairs it has made to the county-owned Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale.

This is turning into an ugly divorce. But eventually the lawyers and accountants will figure it all out and the taxpayers and hockey fans of Nassau County will be the losers.

Nothing will change the fact that the county dropped the puck in negotiations to keep the team on Long Island. In 2015 the Islanders are leaving for Brooklyn.

Each season after that the county will lose jobs and millions of dollars.
