Bug Scout
Saturday, Aug. 5, 10-11 a.m.
Bug scouts ages 4 to 10 will head out to the Great Lawn, woods, pond, and beach in search of little creatures in their habitats. They will look for flying insects and even dig into the soil to see what crawling bugs can be unearthed there. Participants can view the Conservancy’s apiary and build a paper towel bee house, among other fun projects.

Listen Up! Storybook Strolls — “The Day the Crayons Quit”

Poor Duncan just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: his crayons quit! Blue crayon needs a break from coloring all those bodies of water. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking — each believes he is the true color of the sun. Little ones ages 3 to 5 can hear this fun tale as they stroll the gardens and later create a unique take-home craft. Free with admission.

Tremendous Trees
Sunday, Aug. 6, 12-1:30 p.m.
Kids 6 years and older will become Planting Fields tree detectives while exploring the vast collection of trees that the arboretum has to offer. They will learn about the important relationship that exists between trees and people, and how to identify trees just by looking at their leaves and bark. Afterwards, they can stay and practice being a tree detective by helping the arboretum staff to identify trees. Free admission with $8 parking fee. Registration is required.

Carriage House Children’s Theater Presents: “Little Red”

The Carriage House Children’s Theater will present the story of “Little Red Riding Hood” — the way the animals of the forest tell it. When the audience meets Little Red, she’s not just a little girl, she’s a little girl wolf! She, her Mama Wolf and Grandma Wolf are being stalked by some over-eager hunters. See how Little Red and her family outsmart the humans in this animal-friendly, audience-participation play. Tickets are $10.
