Interfaith Nutrition Network needs the help of volunteers

The Island Now

A few days ago, I ran into a friend I hadn’t seen recently. I happened to be wearing a baseball cap that said “INN” and my friend asked me if I was still volunteering for them.

I said, “Yes, this is my tenth year.”   Then he asked me why I do it.

The quick answer was “because it makes me feel good to help others.”

But that was only the tip of the iceberg.   When I’m at the soup kitchen handing a plate of hot, nutritious food to a hungry child, or a senior citizen, or a veteran down on his luck, I feel blessed to be able to do that.

When I talk to friends or send out a mailing asking my neighbors to make a donation to help Long Islanders in need, I feel blessed when so many respond with such generosity.

But the real reason I’ve done this the last 10 years is that it’s the right thing to do.  If we want to live in a compassionate society, it has to start with each of us:  caring about our neighbors, caring about strangers, knowing that each of us in some dark moment might need the same helping hand.

The beautiful thing is that none of us has to do a lot if all of us do a little.  We have it in our power to banish hunger, to banish homelessness, to replace despair with hopefulness.

Please join me in supporting the work of the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN), which has provided food, shelter, and support services to Long Islanders in need for over 25 years.

A contribution – in whatever amount is comfortable for you – can be mailed to:  Dave Golbert, 7 Lee Court West, Great Neck, NY  11024.   Please make your check payable to: The Interfaith Nutrition Network.

Each of us can make a difference.  Together we can change the world.
