Readers Write: Increased class sizes no threat to quality of students’ education

The Island Now

I would like to voice my opinion regarding your article on school class sizes that appeared in the Sept. 20 issues.

Saying that a child will have a hard time learning in a class of 23 to 25 students is ridiculous.

Both my wife and I went to school in the late 1950s to 1960s where class sizes were normally 50 to 55 students and we had no trouble learning. There was one teacher, you paid attention in class, did your homework and learned because you had respect for your teacher.

Many of our classmates went on to become doctors, lawyers, and successful business people. Learning is not a matter of class size.

Perhaps the parents need to spend more time helping with schoolwork and less time with so many outside activities. I also question the need for school superintendents for every district (not to mention the expense) when New York City schools have just one.

This is just my opinion.
