The Folk Music Society of Huntington welcomes back The Slambovian Circus of Dreams to its monthly First Saturday Concerts series on Saturday, Jan. 6. The 8:30 p.m. concert at the Congregational Church of Huntington (30 Washington Drive, Centerport) is preceded by an open mic at 7:30 p.m.
Formed in Sleepy Hollow in the late 1990s, The Slambovian Circus of Dreams has achieved near legendary status as a pioneering alt-folk and Americana jam band, while remaining on the fringes of the music industry. The Slambovians’ lively, late-night musical extravaganzas have made the band Falcon Ridge Folk Festival favorites for more than a decade. Their music has been variously described as “hillbilly-Floyd,” “folk-pop,” “alt-country, roots-rock,” and “surreal Americana” — a clear indicator of its singularly indescribable uniqueness.
“The Slambovians cast a wide net … [their] music seems to energize anyone who hears it,” said Relix magazine.
Dancing freely between all existing religious and philosophical mythologies, the music is uplifting, empowering, at times haunting, and a lot of fun. Elements of The Incredible String Band, Dylan, Bowie, Neil Young and the Decemberists are all part of The Slambovian Circus of Dreams’ musical mix.
Fronted by songwriter Joziah Longo (vocals/guitar/harmonica), the band features guitarist/mandolin player Sharkey McEwen, multi-instrumentalist Tink Lloyd (accordion, cello, uke, theremin, melodica), and Felipe Torres (percussion).

Now entering its 50th year, the Folk Music Society of Huntington presents two monthly concert series, a monthly folk jam, and an annual folk festival each summer in conjunction with the Huntington Arts Council. Its Hard Luck Café series at Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre will feature singer-songwriters Sophie Buskin and Joshua Garcia on Thursday, Jan. 18. FMSH also co-sponsors the Cinema’s Tuesday, Jan. 16 presentation of “Folk Music From Greenwich Village: 1960s,” part of the Music Legends Live educational lecture series hosted by Bill Shelly and featuring nearly two hours of archival footage.
