The Island Now

The library is sponsoring a Toys for Tots Drive, in conjunction with Assemblyman Ed Ra’s office. The donated toys would benefit the Child Life program at NYU Langone Hospital, as well as the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, supports children who are ill as well as underprivileged families.

Both of these organizations rely on the generosity of others to be able to provide children with toys throughout the entire year. We ask for only new, unwrapped toys and we thank you for your generosity.

The Power of Herbs with Micheline – Virtual Program
Tuesday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m. Beating the Blues. Winter can be rough on all of us. The cold weather makes it harder to move. Kapha (a dosha that comes from ayurveda) naturally builds in the body and makes it harder to get moving. Herbs like Ginger help us heat up and give us a boost and boosts the immune system as well. Seasonal Affective Disorder affects a lot of people. Sunlight plays a huge part in this. The good news is herbs can help support, nourish and tonify our bodies which inturn helps with sadness and depression. We will talk about Nervine, Adaptogen and Bitter herbs which all play a different part in chasing away the winter blues.

Inner Peace This Holiday Season Through Meditation – Virtual Program
Wednesday, December 15 at 2 p.m. Join long time meditator Gerry Gorman, as he discusses the extraordinary effect of meditation. Throughout the program, Mr. Gorman will also present a simple, yet powerful meditation technique that will be explained and practiced during the session. This technique can enrich one’s life on many levels and help with seasonal stress.

Wednesday, December 15 at 6:30 p.m. The book being discussed is: The Day the Chinese Attacked by Edwin Hoyt. “Examines the reasons for China’s entrance into the Korean War, turning what was supposed to be a peacekeeping mission into a superpower confrontation.”
