The Herricks Public Schools Board of Education and administration appointed James Zervas as the new director of mathematics K-12 on Jan. 14. He joins the district with extensive experience as an administrator, most recently having served as department chairperson for math, business, technology and science in the East Rockaway School District.
Zervas has observed teachers, analyzed data, co-led math and science committees, taught numerous math courses and supported East Rockaway’s Science Research Program.
He was instrumental in updating elementary math and science programs, accelerating eighth-grade students to Algebra and hosting the VEX Robotics I-Design Southern New York Championships, among many other highlights.
Earlier in his career, Zervas taught mathematics at Sewanhaka Middle/High School, Mamaroneck High School and Smithtown High School.
He obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Binghamton University, his Master of Arts Degree from Queens College and his Advanced Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership from Stony Brook University. He is a member of the Nassau BOCES and Western Suffolk BOCES Math Leaders Collegial Circle.
“I am thrilled for the opportunity to work with the students, families, faculty, staff, administration and Board of Education of the Herricks school system,” Zervas said. “I feel that my 20+ years of experience teaching math to a diverse population of students in the different districts that I’ve worked in has prepared me to work in this multicultural district. I will make success in mathematics for each individual student my top priority as the Director. I look forward to getting started!”
