All three of the Herricks Public Schools’ elementary buildings have been recognized as Project Lead the Way Distinguished Schools.
Center Street, Denton Avenue and Searingtown schools were recognized for increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in their PLTW programs, and are among only 214 elementary schools across the country to receive this designation.
To be eligible for the designation, schools had to offer at least two PLTW Launch modules at each grade level and have more than 75 percent of the student body participating during the 2017-18 school year.
Herricks implemented Project Lead the Way in grades K-5 during the 2015-16 school year and has expanded upon it since then. The curriculum emphasizes the STEM components of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and encompasses four modules: two engineering segments, one biomedicine unit and one computer science piece. Collaboration and hands-on engagement are key, as students work together and learn through trial and error to solve problems.
“Our schools have embraced the Project Lead the Way program and have brought excellent content, support materials and engaging instructional approaches into the classrooms,” said Superintendent of Schools Fino Celano. “We are proud of our teachers’ enthusiasm and our students’ eagerness to learn.”
