The Herricks Lady Highlanders defeated the Long Beach Lady Marines 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon led by seniors Alannah O’Shea and Caitlin Cosme, who both scored two goals.
Herricks goalkeepers Elaine Liu and Erica Lorenzana combined for eight saves.
Herricks head coach Jessica Henry said the win was one they needed to solidify a playoff spot.
“It was a great win,” Henry said. “You always look for an exciting game and we got that. The competition was great and it could have gone either way. Luckily enough, it went our way.”
In the first half, Long Beach took advantage of a slow start by Herricks by controlling the play.
They struck first on a goal by Katie Whelan with 27:13 left in the first half. Roughly five minutes later, Long Beach increased their lead 2-0 on a goal by Kate Conway.
With 43 seconds left to play in the first half, Herricks grabbed the momentum back on a goal by O’Shea to trim the lead 2-1.
The ball came to O’Shea and she took a shot that sailed right over Long Beach goalkeeper Sage Bernstein and into the net to cut their deficit.
Liu finished the first half with four saves for Herricks, who outshot Long Beach 9-6 in the first half.
Henry said she told the team during halftime they weren’t working hard enough in the first half and had to come out strong to start the second.
“I told them that hard work beats talent,” Henry said. “We’re a very talented team but we were not working hard and if you want to change the outcome of the game, you’re going to have to work hard.”
Herricks quickly tied the game on a goal by Cosme five minutes into the second half. Cosme was able to power her way through the attacking third to notch the equalizer.
Cosme netted her second goal of the game with 29:38 left to play.
The sequence started once Lorenzana, who recorded four saves, kicked the ball out to midfield.
Forward Nicole Garcia and Cosme created a give and go, resulting on a two on one chance as they sprinted into the attacking third.
Cosme tapped in the goal to give Herricks a 3-2 lead.
Long Beach answered back on a goal by Grace Conway to tie the game at three with 19:30 remaining in the game.
With 3:30 left to play, Garcia had an opportunity to put Herricks ahead but was tripped inside the box. Herricks was awarded a penalty kick and O’Shea took the kick.
O’Shea scored her second goal of the game to give Herricks a 4-3 lead.
O’Shea said as a senior and captain, she was confident enough to take the shot and give her team the lead.
“I just feel like I had to step up,” O’Shea said. “I just had to stay composed and I handled it. I’m very happy with the way it ended.”
Cosme said the senior’s final home game was bittersweet but at the end of the day, it was a team effort that got them the win.
“We always say ‘Si Se Puede’ (We can do it) and that’s exactly what happened,” Cosme said. “We just had to believe and play our game. It all came together and I couldn’t be more proud of the team.”
