Harrington teaches religious ed to kids

The Island Now

Director Anne Harrington, with more than 35 years of experience in the field of early childhood education, oversees this Christian cooperative school located at the Community Reformed Church in Manhasset. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Hunter College, a master’s degree from Queens College and is a New York State certified teacher.

Her years of teaching experience include Head Start and Pre-Kindergarten in the Yonkers Public Schools, as well as director of Community Church of Douglas Nursery School. A longtime resident of Manhasset, Harrington has been active in the community through numerous school and church activities, including teaching religious education to children ages  5 through 12 at St. Mary’s Church.

North Shore Nursery School is registered by the New York State Department of Education and follows the state guidelines for curriculum. Harrington says the school offers half-day morning programs for 2, 3 and 4 year olds and emphasizes social and spiritual development as well as academic skills. She says that language arts, pre-writing skills, math and science, as well as music enrichment classes are an integral part of the program. Physical activity time is provided daily in a large outdoor play area with colorful climbing equipment.  During inclement weather, the children enjoy a large indoor playroom equipped with many play centers including riding toys.

Employed at the school are experienced, warm and nurturing state certified teachers who implement a well-rounded curriculum that balances essential social skills with a solid foundation in academic readiness, according to Harrington.

“The individual and age-appropriate needs of each child are the focus of daily activities,” she said.  “Children have fun learning through a hands-on play-oriented program where experiences are carefully selected for educational value. Throughout our history, we have enjoyed hearing how well our children have done in kindergarten, elementary school, high school, college and in life! We now welcome back many of our former students with their own children. This is the place to get to know other parents, to enjoy time in the classroom with your child and build strong friendships and support systems.”

Harrington adds, “Christian Education completes our program. Children learn to love God and one another through sharing, songs, and simple, age appropriate Bible stories. This truly enriches our school. Our program emphasizes social, emotional, academic and spiritual learning.”

Limited spaces are available for Fall 2013. For more information and a tour of the school please call Anne Harrington, Director, at (516) 365-7244.
