Join author Antonia Petrash for this lunch event about Long Island and the Woman Suffrage Movement on Friday, March 13 at 12:15 p.m. For seventy-two long years, American women fought for the right to vote, and many remarkable women on Long Island worked tirelessly during this important civil rights movement. The colorful, and wealthy Alva Vanderbilt Belmont was undoubtedly the Island’s most outspoken and controversial advocate for women suffrage, but many other women joined her in the fight, including Rosalie Gardiner Jones from Cold Spring Harbor and Harriet Burton Laidlaw from Sands Point. Join local historian Antonia Petrash as she shares with you the story of these remarkable women who fought for political equality for themselves, and for future generations. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

World Travels with Ron Brown
Join Ron Brown on Friday, March 13 at 3 p.m., for this presentation on “Czestochowa, Poland: The Woman Who Saved Poland.” Whenever Catholic peoples are in trouble, they turn to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and she readily appears to them and saves them. The French were saved by Our Lady of Lourdes and the Portuguese were rescued by Our Lady of Fatima. The Mexicans were repeatedly saved from destruction by Our Lady of Guadalupe. Mary has likewise come to the rescue of the long-persecuted Polish people in the form of Our Lady of Czestochowa. The sacred city of Czestochowa remains the holiest city in Poland and the goal of faithful Poles from around the world. In times of trouble, this patroness has preserved Poland and marked the nation as holy.

Live at PWPL – Basket House Band
If every history book and written account of Ireland were to vanish, her entire story would still be told in song and her spirit expressed in melody. Basket House Band is a testament to this fact. Join them for a performance on Sunday, March 15, at 2 p.m. which will include furious jigs and reels, haunting slow airs, ballads of romantic Ireland, teanga na nGaeil, songs and stories of the Irish diaspora and a few old favorites. Led by former Dublin schoolteacher, Peadar Hickey, Basket House Band turns authentic Irish tradition into the best party you’ve ever been to. You will feel the cobblestoned streets of Dublin’s Temple Bar under your feet as Peadar sings about his hometown. Peadar has performed at many of the biggest Irish festivals in the country including, the Cleveland Irish Festival and Kansas City Irish Festival, while also having the honor of performing for The President of the United States and other dignitaries in March 2016. Peader will be joined by Vonnie Quinn, a former member of Ireland’s National Youth Orchestra. Vonnie holds performance and teaching diplomas in violin and piano and won an Irish Harp scholarship to the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Basket House Band will wrap the green flag around as they steer you through Ireland’s joys and troubles in a masterclass of musicianship.

“The Way You Look Tonight”: The Lyrics of Dorothy Fields
At a time when few women worked in the music industry, Dorothy Fields became the first major female songwriter. She was born into a show business family in 1904, began writing lyrics in the 1920’s and continued writing lyrics through her last Broadway show in 1973, Seesaw. In between, she worked with many great songwriters like Jimmy McHugh (“On the Sunny Side of the Street”, “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” and “I’m in the Mood for Love”), Jerome Kern (“Pick Yourself Up”, “The Way You Look Tonight”, “A Fine Romance”) Sigmund Romberg (“Close as Pages in a Book”) and Cy Coleman (“Big Spender” and “It’s Not Where You Start”). You may not immediately recognize her name, but you will most certainly know most of her songs. Join the Port Washington Library on March 16 at 3 p.m. for this special performance. Be prepared to walk out singing her lyrics. Musical theater and opera expert, Marc Courtade will guide this exploration of Dorothy Fields. MAC

Philip Harwood Presents “Rod Serling: The Early Years: Program 3”
Film historian Philip Harwood will screen and discuss the Playhouse 90 episode The Comedian (1957) on March 16 at 7 p.m., which Serling adapted from a novella by Ernest Lehman. Mickey Rooney portrays egomaniac television comedian Sammy Hogarth, who vents his wrath on everyone around him, including his brother, played by Mel Torme, and his writer, played by Edmond O’ Brien. John Frankenheimer directed.

Strategies can only take you so far if you don’t know a dependent clause from a misplaced modifier. ACT/SAT specialist Ethan Mann will teach and review the grammar and punctuation rules you need to know. Take-home study guides will be provided.
