Great Neck park restored from microburst damage

I’ve always heard the saying “something good comes out of something bad” and this is a perfect example.

During the June 2010 microburst that took Great Neck by surprise, power lines were mangled, houses and cars were battered and trees were damaged.

Unfortunately, the trees in the Park District’s Village Green were adversely affected, encouraging the Friends of the Parks Foundation to create an initiative to raise funds for their restoration.

Today, with the help of those donations, the Village Green has been repaired.

Thanks to all those who have donated, numerous trees have been planted, the fountain has been replaced and three totems have been masterfully crafted out of tree trunks left standing, by award- winning chainsaw carver, Ken Packie. Sunday, May 26, some of the donators came down to the Village Green to revel in the beauty of the park.

John and Stephanie Ryan donated in honor of their grandson, Lucas Benjamin Edelstein and Phyllis Brusilof contributed on behalf of her grandson, Harrision Fink. For all those who generously donated toward this fund, the Great Neck Park District Board of Commissioners and staff offer their sincere appreciation.

The restored Village Green, which has been part of the park district since the 1920s, continues to be a beautiful, unique hub for all to enjoy.
