Great Neck North High School played against Friends Academy on Oct. 24 at home in their Homecoming football game.

Both teams played hard but Friends Academy won the game 38-20.

Great Neck North is 1-6 this season and Friends Academy is 4-3.

North High was one of five schools selected to participate this year in the American Cancer Society’s “A Crucial Catch” fundraising program, which is sponsored by the National Football League.

North High’s Student Organization took the lead of the fundraising, Student organization advisor Sharon Miller said, and in the week leading up to Homecoming, they tied in “A Crucial Catch” into Spirit Week.

Donation collection cans were available throughout the school and $10 T-shirts were sold with the “Crucial Catch” logo on the front, Miller said.

During halftime of the game, the American Cancer Society and Student Organization offered a presentation in honor of Jane Maher and Rose Marie Fransioli, two former faculty members who died from cancer, and Susanne Marcus, an ESL teacher who is currently battling cancer.

“Due to the recent untimely passing of two of our own, Jane Maher and Rose Marie Fransioli, along with the ongoing battle that Susanne Marcus is so valiantly fighting, there couldn’t be a better time for our school to band together in loving memory and support of these incredible women,” Miller said.

She added that the staff’s goal of raising $1,000 was exceeded and they raised over $3,000, though they did not have an official number yet.
