With International Women’s Day approaching in March, the Gold Coast Arts Center is set to present an exhibition inspired by the growth of women in the art world.

On Jan. 24, the Gold Coast Arts Center will open its “Wonder Women” exhibit, an exhibition showcasing contemporary female artists and their stories.

“I feel as a female curator, it’s appropriate to do an exhibition that celebrates women artists,” gallery director Jude Amsel said. “Wonder Women is dedicated to the inspiration, celebration, and encouragement of women working in the division of fine arts.”

Nine artists from all over the world using different styles of art including photography, paintings and sculptures will be presented at the exhibit.

Amsel said each artist would have a statement next to their work explaining how they were able to get to where they were.

She added that it was interesting hearing the contrasting situations between younger artists and older artists, who faced difficulties breaking through into the art world as women.

“Young generation artists don’t really have that feeling,” Amsel said. “That for me is very encouraging for women coming up in the artist world that they would be recognized not by gender but by talent.”

The celebration and showcase of female artists has been a focus recently of international art shows like Art Basel, which presents artist showcases in Basel, Hong Kong, and Miami Beach.

While she said she started planning the exhibit “months ago,” Amsel said she is pleased to organize an exhibit similar to trends seen at other exhibits in the art world.

“The Gold Coast Arts Center is right in the cutting edge,” she said. “I’m proud that my intuition was right about this.”

The exhibit will last through March 10, two days after International Women’s Day, a day Amsel said she planned for the exhibit to pass through.

She added that International Women’s Day was an important day for celebrating the work of women, not just artists, over the years.

“It’s incredible that it has become international and I wanted to become a part of that in our area of Great Neck,” Amsel said.

The opening reception begins at 4 p.m.

The Gold Coast Arts Center is located 113 Middle Neck Road in Great Neck.
