FamilyPet, a Great Neck-based chain of pet-related websites, was purchased by Seattle-based company GreaterGood last Wednesday for an undisclosed amount.

“We sat down with them in February to see if they might be interested in a potential relationship and they said they were more interested in an acquisition,” said Jared Katz, founder and president of FamilyPet.

Katz, a resident of Woodbury, said the acquisition will keep the operation at the company’s Barstow Road office, while allowing it to benefit from the brand recognition of GreaterGood.com, a website that seeks to raise funds for non-profit organizations.

“We now have the power and leverage of this company behind us,” Katz said.

A portion of FamilyPet’s profits will now go to charities that are sponsored by GreaterGood, he said.

GreaterGood CEO Tim Kunin said in an e-mail statement “we look forward to expanding our reach in the communities in which we operate as well as providing our existing customers with a wider variety of products and ways to give back.”

FamilyPet.com, which reaches more than 1 million unique visitors a month, is an aggregate site offering news, videos and columns on all things pet related.

The company also has coupaw.com, a discount site for pet related products, and petsitting.com, a site that puts pet owners in touch with professional animal caretakers, which opened in October 2010 and August 2011 respectively, Katz said.

Katz said the company moved into their Great Neck office three years ago, after being forced to move from Manhattan due to rising rent costs.

The company in February received a $2 million grant from Hard 8 Ventures, a Chicago-based investment firm.

Katz said the grant money will be used for additional staff, the improvement of mobile websites and expanded marketing efforts.
