The Great Neck Public Schools Adult Program Continuing Education again offers Driver Education for school district resident high school students, and SAT/PSAT Prep and Life Drawing Classes for high school students. To enroll in the state approved Driver Education program, which runs from the middle of September 2013 to January 2014, high school students must reside in the Great Neck school district, be 16 years of age, and submit a copy of their New York State Learners Permit by Sept. 7. Failure to submit a copy of the Learners Permit before the first day of class will result in a student’s withdrawal from the program.

Students interested in enrolling in the fall 2013 Driver Education Program should file an application immediately. Contact the Adult Program at (516) 441-4949 to request an application, which can be sent by e-mail or regular mail. The application may also be downloaded from the North High School and South High School web site home pages.

This 16-session program includes 24 hours of classroom instruction, plus 24 hours of driving instruction, with six hours behind the wheel and 18 hours in the vehicle as an observer. Classes takes place at the Cumberland Adult Center. It is offered on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons from 4 to 5:30 p.m., or 5:30 to 7 p.m. Bus transportation is provided from the high schools to classes at 4 and 5:30 p.m., and bus service home is available at 5:30 p.m. Students in the later class must provide their own transportation home at 7 p.m.

Car instruction is available Monday through Friday after school, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., or 4 to 5:30 p.m., or Saturday mornings at 8, 9:30, or 11 a.m. at Cumberland. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and some sections are already filled. The fee for the fall program is $555. Students certified for free/reduced-lunch by the school district pay a reduced fee.

The SAT/PSAT prep courses covers the math and verbal content of the SAT and PSAT exams. Students will be shown how to efficiently handle all questions, with particular attention given to word problems (translating complicated problems into simple equations). 

Students will also learn to eliminate wrong choices when faced with unfamiliar vocabulary (students should review vocabulary on their own, since class time will not be spent on this). The writing skills section will also be covered. Purchase and bring to class: The Official Study Guide for the New SAT (published by the College Board); this book, the only one with questions from actual exams, will be used throughout the course. 

Three sections are offered, taught by Anita Friedman, five Mondays, Aug. 19 to Sept. 23 (no class Sept. 2), five Tuesdays, Aug. 20 to Sept. 17 and five Mondays, Sept. 30 to Nov. 4 (no class Oct. 14). All classes meet at Cumberland, from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. The fee is $99 for Great Neck school district resident students; $109 for nonresident students. 

Life drawings are an important addition to all art portfolios, as well as a crucial part of the Advanced Placement Studio in Art program. This course is designed for high school students wishing to enhance their skills in drawing the human figure. Students will have the opportunity to learn a range of approaches and techniques, while growing and developing as an artist. 

Various materials will be supplied. Weekly models included in fee. Amy Orange teaches this class on six Wednesdays, Nov. 6 to Dec. 18 (no class Nov. 27), 7 to 10 p.m. The fee is $96 for Great Neck school district resident high school students and $106 for nonresident high school students.
