GN Plaza a dangerous place for pedestrians

The Island Now

Pedestrians are at peril in the plaza.

In response to David Levin’s letter of March 29, he was so right. People are afraid to cross Middle Neck Road in the Village of Great Neck Plaza because of the multitude of vehicular assaults on pedestrians by careless drivers.

I am a lucky survivor of such a vehicular assault, after being hit while crossing Middle Neck Road in the crosswalk and with the light on August 15, 2011.

To boot, I am, or at least I was, a member of the village’s Pedestrian Safety Committee. I haven’t been invited to a meeting in almost two years.

While I participated on the committee, we did a walk-about with our full-time mayor to identify the pedestrian crossing danger zones. The one where I was hit is notorious.

However, our full-time mayor stated that this is the county’s problem, and she has made no effort to sit down with the county to work out a viable solution.

I guess there’s no photo-op there.
