Readers Write: GN Library spending priorities wrong, unfair

The Island Now

I grew up under humble circumstances during the depression. I eventually made it (well enough) to buy a house in Great Neck.

I bought the house that Madam Chang Kai-shek had lived in when she represented China at the UN.

For all of you who remember that the United Nations used to be in Lake Success ask the school why the southern boundary of the school district is now inclusive of what we call New Hyde Park.

For those of you who are curious as to why our Great Neck School district is No. 6 and 7 I suggest you look up the records or call the school. The school may have the answer.

The Great Neck School District went bankrupt and Lakeville agreed to salvage Great Neck. The only remnant left is the elementary school.

Our library is the same district as the school. Most of our population lives south of the tracks, and earns less than those north of the tracks. Forcing people to pay for unnecessary renovation and beautification of “Main” versus enlarging Parkville and improving Lakeville is unreasonable.

I was the one who suggested raising late fees. They were doubled. I suggested limiting books on the bestseller list to one week. Someone did not understand. Books for one week are constantly on the shelves in the various libraries and very few people go to take them out.

Go back to my original suggestion: one week loan with about $0.50 fine for tardiness in returning. At least those books will re-enter circulation.
