The annual Glen Head School Reading Celebration began on Jan. 7. Principal Lori Nimmo hosted the Opening Ceremony with the theme, “Reading Lifts Us Up!”

She stated, “Books can life us up, bring inspiration, and joy to our everyday lives. The power of words is like no other. They can move you, build you up, and give you the power to achieve anything and all things. They have the power to lift others through a compliment, thoughtful card or letter, even the lyrics of a song dedicated to a friend. We can lift each other up, be there to support one another, and use kind words to help someone soar.”

During the opening ceremony, all the Glen Head students took the reading pledge. During the next few weeks, they will be reading many books related to the theme, making banners, parents will be visiting as reading partners, and guest author, Kathryn Otoshi, will be visiting.

During the opening Reading Celebration Ceremony, Principal Nimmo read, “Words and Your Heart,” by author Kate Jane Neal. As in the past, students are always encouraged to read throughout the year, but for the celebration, reading logs will be noted and calculated for each student so that totals can be summarized at the end of the month.

The closing celebration will take place on Jan. 25. At this time, the teachers will present a skit and all student banners. The Glen Head book fair takes place Jan. 15-18.
