Reader’s Write: Giving still needed after the holidays are over

The Island Now

Frederick Bedell Jr. has it right in his letter in last week’s paper. “Christmas is over, but the needy remain.”

In the New York metro/Long Island area, there are currently over 50,000 people spending their nights in homeless shelters.  Of that 50,000, more than 20,000 are children.

The cold weather that has descended on us poses a real threat to some who are the most vulnerable.  In recent memory, a man sleeping in a car in Glen Cove, froze to death and a veteran living in the woods near Huntington died of hypothermia.

The needs of the hungry and the homeless never take a holiday. They are 24/7, 365 days a year. One of the organizations helping to meet those needs is The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) which provides food, shelter, and support services to thousands of Long Islanders each year through its 15 soup kitchens, three emergency shelters, and numerous long-term housing sites.

Despite reduced funding from federal and local government, The INN continues to help our neighbors in need and never turns anyone away.  To do this, the INN depends on the generosity of local residents.  Every donation helps feed hungry children, senior citizens on limited incomes, and homeless veterans.

If you wish to support the INN’s mission, please mail contributions to:  Dave Golbert, 7 Lee Court West, Great Neck, NY 11024.  Please make your check payable to:  The INN.

Every donation – large or small – makes a difference in the life of someone who needs our support and our compassion. Hasn’t each of us, in some dark moment of our lives, needed a helping hand?
