Giants best Rays for Minors Division crown

The Island Now

The Stutzmann & Son Funeral Home/ Tudor Advisory Group Giants captured the Merillon Athletic Association Minors Division title by beating the Parker Jewish Institute Rays, 4-1 this past weekend.

On a picture perfect day for baseball, the many fans were treated to a well-played game by both sides.

But it was the Giants who got out to a fast start and never let the rays back in it.

In the second inning, the Giants started off the scoring with a double by Kenny Hirschfeld followed by a based-loaded walk by Stephen Lopez and a two-out clutch frozen rope by Joe Montoni, which gave the mighty Giants a 3-0 lead.

Ryan Wasserman cruised along through the super Rays lineup with 5 1/3 innings of no-hit ball while only allowing two walks and striking out 12.

The Giants scored again in the top half of the sixth with another RBI by Montoni, his third of the game.

Anthony Ponzo Jr. contributed by going 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs scored.

Stephen Lopez was also 1-for-1 with a walk and one RBI.  Garrett Roth was 1-for-1 with a walk and one run scored.

Kudos to the Rays on a great game and season and thanks to all the parents who allowed their boys to play the great game of baseball this season.
