From the Desk of Delia DeRiggi-Whitton: Giving vets the best service a county goal

The Island Now

I believe every veteran, regardless of where or for how long he or she has served our country, deserves every service we can possibly provide.

To help ensure they are being optimally assisted at the county level, I proudly serve as ranking member of the Nassau County Legislature’s Veterans Services committee. Veterans Service members work to meet the needs of the more than 50,000 veterans that call Nassau County home.

Aside from legislation, I help to enact into law, here are several services offered to veterans in Nassau County:

The VA Medical Center offers services in Nassau County through two mobile medical units and a clinic. The mobile units are located at Clinton G. Martin Park in New Hyde Park and the Glen Cove VFW Post #347 at 15 Hill Street.

The New Hyde Park van operates Monday (physical therapy), Wednesday (podiatry) and Thursday (primary care), and the Glen Cove one provides primary care and physical therapy on Tuesday. Call 631-261-4400, ext. 7978 to schedule an appointment.

The VA also has a Nassau location at the East Meadow Clinic, 2201 Hempstead Turnpike, Building Q. Call 631-754-7978 for an appointment.

Rebuilding Together Long Island assists veterans struggling with limited incomes and/or physical challenges who need home repairs and maintenance. Income-qualified veterans are never charged for these services. Visit rebuildingtogetherli.org or call 631-777-7894.

The Town of North Hempstead’s Project Independence Transportation Program offers veterans who are residents of North Hempstead free transportation for food shopping twice a week and other options, as well as discounted taxi rides for medical appointments and other needs. Call 311 or 516-869-6311 for details or to schedule a pickup.

City of Glen Cove Veterans Affairs Director Tony Jimenez works to ensure the city’s veterans receive the benefits they have earned through their service. He assists with a variety of needs, including housing and transportation for medical appointments. Contact Jimenez at Glen Cove City Hall at 516-759-6798.

The Nassau County Police Department helps keep veterans safer and connected to appropriate care by checking a box in their reports identifying veterans. This was enacted due to the fact that nearly 50 percent of veterans who require mental health services never seek treatment.

United Veterans Beacon House helps veterans find housing, jobs and meet other needs. Visit uvbh.com or 631-665-1571 for details.

A caseworker with the Town of North Hempstead specializes in the needs of veterans and helps them access benefits, services and DD214/Separation Documents. Call 311 to schedule an appointment.
