Readers Write: Free press not a license to spread misinformation

The Island Now

Again, the local parrot for the Tea Party line emerges from his nest in the very comfortable environs of North Hills, the habitat of many 2 percenters, to warn us of the imminent demise of our economy.

He abuses the privileges of having a free press, but there is no excuse for a publisher refusing to apply some standards when deciding what to publish.

As evidence, let me note that our DDS starts his letter by talking about his status as a Medicare recipient. What does that have to do with the main thrust of Obama care, which is to insure the millions who lack health care coverage?

He then proceeds to fantasize about the consequences of the introduction of the law, lies about its actual provisions, insulting everyone in sight who may possibly be concerned with the interests of our citizens.

By the way, many readers are wondering why Morris feels compelled to include in every letter his inordinate pride in his accomplishments and sign with his full name and title.

Respected retirees of the dental profession are cringing at the possibility of being identified with his ideas.

He may have been a good dentist. Dentistry is an honorable profession, part of the many helping professions.

The problem is that does not necessarily qualify Morris to be an expert on social, economic or political matters.

He announced, in retirement, that he had found his new mission. Wrong choice!

He wanders, bloviates, and obviously has not done any serious research on these subjects. I suspect that he simply repeats what he is fed by Tea Party propagandists.

My advice to the party of “No,” try to remember some history. Many social advances started with laws that were improved when they needed amendment.

You want Obama care ended before it gets a chance to be tried. It is complicated because it had to please a multitude of opinions and correct an enormously complicated problem.

Stop predicting doom, give up your own selfish interests and work to improve it.

It is so obvious that you are afraid that the American public will like it and then you will never succeed in destroying it. Above all try to care for your fellow man. Try to work for it because it is a good thing to do.

I have a suggestion for those who disagree with Morris: Include your credentials. I’ll start. Daughter of an immigrant, widowed young, garment worker, and ILGWU member.
