State Sen. Jack Martins (R-Old Westbury) announced last Wednesday that he is sponsoring a free legal service program in Port Washington.
The program, a news release said, will be held on Sept. 13 at the Port Washington Library at 1 Library Drive.
The release said that “the mobile legal help center will offer free legal assistance to residents in need.”
The program, which is in partnership with the New York Legal Assistance Group and the New York State Office of Court Administration, will assist residents with issues relating to domestic violence, family law, healthcare and disability benefits, housing (tenants only), identity theft and consumer credit issues and end-of-life planning, the release said.
“We’ve been providing this service to communities throughout the district so people in need can get free, one-on-one assistance from trained professionals,” Martins said.
This is the second time Martins has sponsored this event in Port Washington, Martin’s director of communications, Christopher Schneider, said. The first event was held in March, Schneider said, “and the response was so great, so we decided to bring it back again now.”
Residents seeking legal advice, the release said, “should bring with them any documentation that may be useful to the NYLAG staff in providing assistance.”
The mobile legal help center will accept walk-ins, but an appointment is recommended, the release added.
“Life’s most difficult issues, whether personal, health or financial, are often legal issues as well,” said Martins, an attorney. “In those instances, people turn to attorneys for guidance to protect their interests. When the time comes, everyone should have that opportunity. This program ensures that they do.”
