The unique inventions of Floral Park-Bellerose School sixth-graders were featured at the school’s Inventors Fair on Jan. 29.
Each sixth-grade student was tasked with creating something that would help make their life easier or to improve on an existing invention that had already been created. Before beginning their projects, students had to submit a “patent application” to their teachers and parents for approval. They used the engineering design process to bring their concept to life. They first defined their problem and conducted research, then specified requirements, brainstormed solutions, selected the best one, built a prototype, and then tested and designed their invention.
The inventions were exhibited for all of the school’s students to view. Each class that visited had an opportunity to ask the student-inventors questions about their creations. A wide array of projects was displayed, including a cooking pot that retained its heat, socks with shin guards that stay attached and a snowball maker.
