Floral Park Board of Trustees Reports June 15

The Island Now

Recreation Department – Trustee Lynn Pombonyo
The park is now crowded with evening activity as our Floral Park Little League and Adult Basketball and Volleyball Leagues are in full swing. Summer rec programs will be starting Saturday, June 26th and Monday, June 28th. There’s still time to register for Children’s Gardening and Adult AM and PM Aerobics, Saturday Yoga, Saturday Zumba, Cardio Kickboxing and Senior Agility by going to fpvillage.org or calling 326-6336.

The coming weekend will be a special one at our park. The FDNY Lt. Michael Davidson Father’s Day Weekend Baseball Tournament, sponsored and hosted by our very own Floral Park Little League, will begin with games this Friday evening, June 18th. On Saturday morning at 11AM, a special ceremony honoring Lt. Davidson, who passed away in the line of duty at a tragic fire in Manhattan on March 23, 2018, will take place with our Little League, first responders, community members and honored guests participating. Floral Park’s eight to twelve year old Little Leaguers, as well as other area teams, a total of twelve teams, will play twenty-one games throughout the weekend with the championship games taking place Saturday evening to Sunday. This is all to honor a very special family man and hero who served the people of New York City. Thank you, Lt. Davidson.

Conservation Society – Trustee Lynn Pombonyo
The summer flowers are blooming and all is beautiful in our Centennial Gardens. Join the hundreds of others who visit every week, daily between the hours of noon and 5PM. Thanks to our Floral Park Conservation Society and all the other volunteers – individuals, families, community organizations and others who weed and maintain the Gardens and make them sparkle.

Department of Public Works – Trustee Lynn Pombonyo
As our recreation and pool activities go into high gear, thanks to DPW for helping to get things ready by striping the parking lots for the many vehicles that are already using them, and painting and sprucing up the Tool Room building. Line striping will continue throughout the Village on roadways, at crosswalks, on stop lines and at our schools.

Chambers of Commerce and Our Businesses – Trustee Lynn Pombonyo
If you drive on Covert Avenue, you’ve seen big changes in the work being done on our fire-damaged building. The pre-construction phase is in progress as the badly damaged facades, walls, ceilings and other pieces of debris are being removed to make way for construction. The next set of construction drawings has already been approved, and Building Superintendent Renee Marcus and other Village officials are staying in touch with business owners who express interest in information about the rebuilding process. The property owner’s architect for 43-61 Covert has made himself available to respond to the business owners’ questions and provide assistance. There are no updates on 41 Covert, the northern most property, at this time. The Building Department is following up.

In the meantime, Jericho Turnpike, Covert Avenue and Tulip Avenue are gearing up for a busy summer, so please pay our local businesses a visit, enjoy the exciting outdoor dining opportunities, and SHOP AND DINE LOCAL often during your summer in Floral Park and Stewart Manor.

To Our Graduates – Trustee Lynn Pombonyo
The school year is ending for our elementary, high school and college students, so please take a moment to celebrate all our graduates in the Class of 2021!

And to our graduates, you have brought us great pride and we congratulate you! We send you off with our best wishes. Know that we will always be here for you.

Fire Department – Trustee Archie Cheng
Last Friday, our Fire Department responded to a fully involved garage fire. The fire resulted in the complete destruction of the garage. A neighboring garage was also structurally damaged and there was some damage to other houses. As always, our Fire Department did an outstanding job and more importantly there were no physical injuries.

The Department is participating in a 2 day LIRR train safety/rescue class this month. They will be training at the Fire Service Academy on a real LIRR train. Chief Saville wanted me to inform our residents that there has been an uptick of Rescue Calls due to the warm weather. People should remember to stay hydrated and if necessary stay indoors.

Calls for the month of May-124 total calls; Rescue related-97 Rest of Department-35

Third Track – Trustee Archie Cheng
The retaining and sound wall work on Charles Street continues. As of today, 3TC has to complete work behind 12 homes and the installation of the supports for the walls will be finished. After all the supports are installed, new measurements will be taken and about one month later the actual installation of the wall pieces will be set in place.

On the weekends of June 26-27 and July 10-11, the Main Line will be shut down for more work in New Hyde Park and Mineola.

At long last, tomorrow at 11 AM, we will be attending the official opening of the three elevators at the Floral Park LIRR Station. We are extremely happy that the elevators are finally open for all riders of the LIRR, especially our residents.

Building Department – Trustee Frank Chiara
I am happy to report that the Floral Blvd. road reconstruction project is now complete. Last week, the road was totally repaved and the traffic striping painted throughout the Blvd. The road has a new smooth surface with new drainage. Many of our residents have already taken the opportunity to not only drive the road but to jog and ride their bicycles on it. It came out really nice!

I would like to thank LKB engineers and Road Work Ahead the contractors for the project, for working together with the Village throughout the project and doing a good job.

I would like to recognize the great job that our Public Works Superintendents Kevin Ginnane and Deputy Superintendent Joseph O’Grady did managing this project. Ensuring not only that all the work was performed to standards but very importantly made all the notifications to our Residents, Schools, Police and Fire Dept. keeping everyone informed and safe as the project progressed. Thank You Kevin and Joe!

Police Department – Trustee Frank Chiara
This past Sunday our Rescue and Police Department responded to a call for service at the Floral Park Motor Inn on Jericho Turnpike. Tragically, this call for an unresponsive female, turned out to be that of a deceased female, a possible victim of a homicide. Our Police Dept. immediately notified and coordinated with Nassau County Police Dept. to initiate an investigation.

Due to the quick and intensive investigation; Nassau County PD has taken a suspect into custody. The investigation revealed that the victim and the suspect, both of whom were not residents of Floral Park, were known to each other and may have been involved in a domestic violence incident.

We are saddened to learn of this unfortunate death and send our condolences to the victim’s family.

Thanks to our Police Dept. and a special thanks to Nassau County PD for investigating this case so efficiently and bringing it to a quick resolve.

I wish all the Fathers in our community a HAPPY FATHERS DAY! Enjoy, take some time to relax and hopefully be pampered by family members.

To all our residents, have an enjoyable, safe summer. ENJOY!!!

Floral Park Library – Trustee Jennifer Stewart
Summer is shaping up to be very busy at the Floral Park Library – outdoor Saturday morning yoga, Monday evening Zumba/Dance Fitness classes are just two of the very popular outdoor events on the Library’s calendar.

The Teen Summer Reading Program is 100% online and teens are entered into a weekly raffle whenever they complete a mini review of completed books.

Registration for all Library programs can be found on the website at floralparklibrary.org

Pool Department – Trustee Jennifer Stewart
We are happy to report that we had a very successful early opening day at the Floral Park Pool this past Saturday June 12th. The grounds and landscaping are beautiful, a huge thank you goes to Superintendent of Recreation Kurt Meyfohrt and his staff for their efforts to beautify the grounds and more importantly for having the pool ready – a day early – for all our members.

We are happy to announce that due to New York State revised COVID-19 guidelines, we can remove most restrictions at the Pool. We no longer need to operate by sessions and will discontinue the reservation system. We will return to normal “modified” hours for June 18th – June 25th from 12 noon to 8pm (before the pool opens for summer hours), as we have in past years. Summer hours begin June 26th and are currently scheduled for 10:00am to 8:45pm.

Registration information for the Summer 2021 Pool Season can be found on the village website at fpvillage.org

Mayor Kevin Fitzgerald
As you can see, there is a lot of great stuff going on here in Floral Park. It is summertime, so please get out there and enjoy all of the amenities that the Village has to offer.

The following is a quick update on the Belmont Redevelopment Project. Village Administrator Bambrick, the rest of the Board and I have continued working with, as recently as today, Senator Kaplan’s office and the Empire State Development Corp. (ESD), concerning the parking lot and the encroachment on the dead ends of Hazel Place, and Mayfair and Crocus Avenues. I am also visiting with residents on a daily basis providing updates and working on what will hopefully result in amenable solutions for all.

As Trustee Chiara said, Happy Father’s Day to all – please enjoy. Thank you.
