Three Wheatley High School seniors have been named semifinalists for the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Krista Chen, Luke Cuomo, Mohommad Konzada, Ashley Kim and Andrew Zuckerman were among the highest scorers in the state on the PSAT/NMSQT, qualifying them for the second round of the nationwide scholarship competition.

Of the 1.5 million students who take the test each year, about 16,000 are selected as semifinalists, according to the program’s website.

In February, the students will find out whether they were named finalists in the program, now in its 61st year.

About half of the finalists will win college scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, colleges and universities or corporations.
