Five NHP-GCP, Herricks board of ed candidates to run for re-election

The five local board of education incumbents whose terms expire in May — three from Herricks and two from New Hyde Park-Garden City Park — will all seek re-election, school officials say.

From Herricks, Brian Hassan and Nancy Feinstein both plan to run. Feinstein said she has already submitted her petitions for a spot on the ballot. The filling deadline is April 20.

Both Hassan and Feinstein won open seats in 2012 when two incumbents decided not to run.

Hassan, a longtime engineer with the Long Island Power Authority and National Grid, played an integral role in the district’s transition to gas heating six years ago. He also served as co-vice president of the Herricks Athletics Boosters.

Feinstein is a former co-president of the Denton School Parent Teacher Association, Herricks Council of PTAs and Herricks Middle School PTA.

From New Hyde Park-Garden City Park, David Del Santo, Frank Miranda and James Reddan will all run for re-election, district superintendent Robert Katulak said.

Del Santo, who is seeking a fourth three-year term, is one of two board members from New Hyde Park-Garden City Park to sit on the Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education.

The Sewanhaka board comprises two representatives from each of its four feeder elementary school districts. Del Santo, an ex-policeman and auditor for the Department of Homeland Security, serves as vice president on both boards.

Frank Miranda, who served on the school board from 2004 to 2007, rejoined the board in 2012 after winning an uncontested election.

He said that he left the board to spend more time with his daughters and help them with their homework, but decided to run again in part to serve as a mediator between the school district and BOCES, where he worked.

The New Hyde Park-Garden City Park board appointed Reddan to his seat in 2014 following the resignation of then-Vice President Patricia Rudd, who relocated to Michigan.

Reddan, a civil engineer who grew up in Garden City Park, had initially lost an election to Trustee Jennifer Kerrane in 2013.

However, he remained active with the district and joined the audit committee.

The Board of Education acts as the governing body of a school district. Last week, the Herricks board of education approved a $108.2 million budget proposal to put before voters on May 18.

The New Hyde Park-Garden City Park will unveil its budget proposal on April 13.
