Garden City Park School fifth graders recently began their fiction unit in their reading lessons.

To ramp up the excitement and get students prepared, fifth grade teachers Maya Guzman and Jaqueline Cipolla decided to create breakout rooms for their students. Students worked collaboratively in groups to escape “Fiction-land Correctional Facilities.” Within these groups, they uncovered the different types of subgenres of fiction, elements that make up these subgenres, as well as different popular book titles within the subgenres. Students had 20 minutes to “escape” and work together to solve each code to get their next clue.
