Readers Write: Ex quartermaster tainted Greatest Generation

The Island Now

I saw the posted notice of the passing of Harry Wurth on the bulletin board of VFW Post 5253. Harry served as its Quartermaster among his other duties. There is no doubt that Harry did much good for the post.

He could have been remembered as one of the Greatest Generation but he chose to forego that honor by knowingly violating several articles of the organization’s by-laws.

He committed these infractions to endear himself to the higher echelons of the organizations. He was able to persist in his wrongdoing because his infractions were known and condoned at all levels of the organization.

His conduct at the post is best summarized in the words of Shakespeare that he penned in Julius Caesar. “The evil that men do lives after them.”
