Endorsement: Nassau County Legislature 11th District

The Island Now

Democrat Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, who is seeking her fourth term representing the 11th District in the Nassau County Legislature, has been an effective advocate for needed reforms in the county, including an independent inspector general to review all county contracts and a redistricting commission to create legislative districts that offer fair elections and respect community boundaries.

DeRiggi-Whitton, who has also served two terms as a member of the Glen Cove City Council, has proven to be an active advocate for her constituents.

DeRiggi-Whitton is opposed by Zefy Christopoulos, a former newspaper editor who has worked both for the City of Glen Cove and Nassau County.

Christopoulos said she would like to see districts drawn fairly but would not commit to a redistricting commission. She also supports an upgraded county Board of Ethics rather than an independent inspector general, which we believe falls well short of the county’s scandal-plagued contract system.

We believe DeRiggi-Whitton is the best choice for the 11th District.

And with Republicans just one seat shy of veto-proof majority — in a county Legislature that has fallen well short in its supervision of county contracts and county finances — her election takes on an even greater importance.

The 11th District includes Sands Point, Port Washington, Port Washington North, Manorhaven, Baxter Estates, Flower Hill, Roslyn, Roslyn Harbor, Glenwood Landing, Sea Cliff and Glen Cove.
