An Elmont man was arrested for assaulting two Nassau County Police Officers Thursday night, according to a release from the county’s police department.

Officials said detectives from the county’s 5th Precinct were dispatched to a residence on South King Street in Elmont in response to a disturbance that occurred.

Hurguens Jasmine, a 24-year-old from Elmont, blocked off the stairs to the second floor of his residence, according to officials.

After officials asked Jasmine to come downstairs, the 24-year-old began swinging a metal broomstick, which struck one officer multiple times, according to the release. Jasmine then resisted arrest by flailing his arms and legs, hitting officers on several occasions, according to the release.

One officer then used an electronic control device to control Jasmine, which allowed them to place him under arrest. While officers were transporting Jasmine to a nearby hospital for treatment and assessment, he allegedly spat on a Nassau Police Medic caring for him and another officer.

One of the officers, according to officials, sustained a laceration at the top of his head and forearm abrasions.  Another officer suffered abrasions on his hands and forearm.  Both were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Jasmine was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of second-degree menacing, two counts of second-degree harassment, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, and resisting arrest, according to the release.

Officials said Jasmine would be arraigned when medically cleared.  Efforts to reach officials for an update on Jasmine’s tentative arraignment were unavailing.
