Don Ashkenase’s letter to the Great Neck community

The Island Now

Prior to my father’s sudden passing on Monday March 8th, he wrote a letter to the community that he planned to read at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday March 16th.

I had the privilege of reading the letter on his behalf and would like to share it with the rest of the community.

Dear Friends,

Two years ago, when I was re-elected to the school board, Karen and I began to talk about my retirement.

As we are approaching another election after my 39 years, Karen and I have fully agreed that I should be stepping down at the end of June 2021, which is the end of my current term.

It is now time to step down. A new generation of enlightened leaders with fresh ideas needs to be welcomed and accepted by our community.

I know for certain that the devotion to our wonderful school community will continue with the present board and with a new replacement for me!

It is with great humility that I thank the entire Great Neck community from the bottom of my heart for all your years of support and encouragement.

It has been an enormous privilege to have worked with so many board of education trustees, district administrators, teachers and support personnel. Each one of you has been dedicated and passionate about providing the best education for our children. I couldn’t be prouder of our school district.

Thank you for the great honor to have served our community for these 39 years!!

I extend my best wishes to you all for a new year of good health, good healing and peace!!!

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I love you all. Don
