This February, the second and third-graders at Denton Avenue School had the opportunity to make art alongside American pop artist Michael Albert.

The students watched and listened to Albert explain how he first began making art and took them through this creative process step by step.

He stressed that his love of art was combined with his concern for the earth and his philosophy on recycling. Throughout the two days, the students and staff were immersed in the rich visual imagery of Albert’s work which utilizes recycled packaging to form a modern-day hieroglyphic.

Inspired as a child by the pop artists of the 60’s and 70’s, Albert explained that everyday images can take on new meaning when rearranged and that inspiration can be found all around us. Together, the students at Denton Avenue collected about 120 pounds of paper, equal to one whole tree, and made 219 individual works of art
