Denton Avenue School places first in NYS reading content

The Island Now

Students in grades K-5 at Denton Avenue School read for a total of 886,611 minutes this summer and placed first in New York State for the greatest amount of time logged. The school kicked off the “Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge” this past June with an assembly, field trips to the local public library for all kindergartners to obtain library cards and an event that provided students with Scholastic passwords and practiced logins.

As a highlight to this event, the esteemed children’s author Alicia Z. Klepeis visited Denton Avenue. The author of more than 70 nonfiction and fiction books encouraged students with many ideas explaining what it takes to research and the many steps of the writing process.

The top readers from each grade level: Matthew Chen (kindergarten), Hanshal Kumar (first-grade), Liam Wu (second-grade), Gopika Shah (third-grade), Preston Wu (fourth-grade) and Shlok Patel (fifth-grade).
