Readers Write: Democracy in Turkey a must

The Island Now

An attempted coup in Turkey by military faction has just taken place but was stopped in part by the people and other forces.

It seems to be a difficult time for one of our important allies.

Democracy in Turkey must not be dismantled and needs to be maintained and not to be destroyed by those seeking power.

Situation like this is not necessarily the will of the people.

As for myself I had served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Leahy DLG  in the ‘70S.

I spent time in Istanbul, Turkey.

I had found the people to be kind, hard working and possessing a most generous spirit.

As such I pray for the people of Turkey in this most trying and troubling of times.
